The best shows and movies on Amazon this month

A league of its own

Available from December 1st
That's right: the movie that famously taught us that there is no crying in baseball. This sports comedy classic with a great cast that includes Tom Hanks, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, and Geena Davis tells the story of the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League from 1943. It's as close to you as it gets perfect movie.

The king's speech

Available from December 1st
If you're still stumbling and unable to get enough of the royals after completing season four of The Crown, then you should definitely make The King & # 39; s Speech your next watch. Colin Firth won an Oscar for portraying King George VI – the father of Queen Elizabeth II – when he worked with a speech therapist (Geoffrey Rush) to help overcome his stutter. Helena Bonham Carter plays George & # 39; s wife Queen Elizabeth, which is especially funny considering she plays Princess Margaret in The Crown. It's all connected!

Sound of metal

Available December 4th
Riz Ahmed (The Night Of) does a hell of a job as Ruben Stone, a heavy metal drummer who is slowly losing his hearing in Sound of Metal, another Oscar contender. Trapped between his passion and his new physical limitations, Ruben embeds himself in the deaf community to control his anger and give him perspective. I would even give Ahmed the chance to take the Oscar home and the wardrobe designer to win my personal Timmy Award for handing out authentic Ruben metal band T-shirts. -Tim Surette

The wilderness

Available December 11th
Amazon is getting into the YA business with this new series about a group of teenage girls struggling to survive after their plane crashed on a desert island, although it quickly becomes clear they didn't end up there by accident. Scary.

The wide

Available December 16th
Television's best science fiction series returns for season five – Amazon recently announced that season six will be the last of the series – with asteroids heading for Earth, a gold rush on an alien planet that kills people in sending other parts of the universe, and the Belters rising up after decades of oppression. Yes, this is The Expanse in all of its beautiful, complex glory. The rollout is new this season. Three episodes will premiere on December 16. There is a new episode every Wednesday. -Tim Surette

Sylvie's love

Available on December 23rd
Tessa Thompson plays Sylvie, an aspiring TV producer who begins a summer romance with a saxophonist (Nnamdi Asomugha), only to reunite years later and find their bond continues to be strong. It is guaranteed to warm your heart. (Update: Amazon has postponed the premiere date from December 25th.)
