FX on Hulus A Instructor: Grade It

One teacher began an inadequate student-teacher relationship with the debut of the FX on Hulu drama on Tuesday – but did you pass or fail the series with you?

Before getting into your thoughts, a quick recap of the first episode: Kate Mara (House of Cards) plays Claire Wilson, an AP English teacher on her first day at a new school in 2013. It becomes very clear that Claire is is the "hot" teacher and different from the stereotypical idea of what an instructor should be. To start with, she steals a lipstick from the store. When her husband Matt (Ashley Zukerman of Succession) asks her why she did it, Claire laughs at it and offers him no explanation beyond just a lipstick and she spends so much money in this business. "It's a bit weird," her husband notes.

In class, Claire reads Dylan Thomas to her students while soccer captain Eric Walker (Love, Victors Nick Robinson) stares at her. But when his friend Logan (Shane Harper from Hightown) checks the class, Eric just says she's fine and complains about how much homework she's assigned. Eric, Logan and their classmate Josh (Dylan Schmid from Snowpiercer) later see Claire in the restaurant where Eric works. Logan, who is far from subtle, sneaks up next to her, pretending to take care of the school.

As soon as his friends leave, Eric and Claire start a real conversation. He tells her he wants to go to UT, but his SAT results are not good enough. Then they laugh at how she can already see that he's smarter than his friend Logan. Eric comes up with the idea that she should teach him, to which Claire replies that she needs to check if it's okay, but she is ready for it. Then Claire drives Eric home and surprises him with her hip selection of music ("Just because I'm a teacher doesn't mean I don't have good taste," she says).

Another line is crossed when Eric sends Claire a friend request on Facebook. She doesn't seem to accept or erase it, but she has a sex dream of him later that night. It is interrupted by her husband Matt, who wakes her to let her know that he is back from his business trip. She should go back to sleep, he suggests, but Claire has something else on her mind: she wants to have sex even though they are both tired, and uses the fact that she is ovulating as a reason / excuse. The next morning, she lies to Matt and tells him that she's going to have brunch with a fellow teacher if she actually meets with Eric for a tutoring session where the two of them are a little too tight.
