The International Olympic Committee has officially added breakdancing to the program of medal events at the 2024 Paris Olympics. It's called Breaking as it was originally dubbed by the dancers at the first hip-hop parties in the Bronx in the 1970s. The first time proposed by the Paris organizers after the exams at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the Olympic break in sport climbing and 3-on-3 basketball competitions will take place on Place de le Concorde in Paris.
Breaking was not originally intended as a sport, but rather as a form of artistic expression that takes its name from the "breaks" that hip-hop DJs use to play popular disco and funk tracks with isolated drum parts that are ideal for Dance suitable, would repeat. After a surge of mainstream popularity in the 1980s, it has evolved into highly acrobatic feats of athleticism competitions that these Olympic events are likely to resemble.
